Blog Post: "Ask Me Anything! Answering Your Questions!"

Hello I recently bought a jaw harp in a souvenir shop near Lake Baikal. After a few self-experiments, I fell in love with it and decided to search the internet to learn more about what it is and how to play it. At first, I came across the term "yurgen kam," and it sounded incredibly beautiful. But then I thought that ancient shamans probably didn't play it the same way. I believe that the jaw harp is an instrument of the soul and emotions, and it shouldn't be limited by notes or rules. Am I mistaken? I remember a saying about the akyn - 'I ride a donkey and sing about what I see.'"

Answer: Not only shamans played the jaw harp. It was primarily a folk instrument. For some reason, there's a fixed stereotype in the collective consciousness that if it's a jaw harp, there must be a shaman nearby. But it's just a cliché.

You are right that the jaw harp is an instrument of the soul and emotions. And from this perspective, it's important to ask yourself if you have enough means to express your soul. If your goal is to play "what I see, I sing," then you don't require specific skills.

However, the jaw harp can offer much more, and you can express a great deal through it. In any field, there are numerous techniques and patterns. They acquire names and formalities. Mastering these techniques allows you to play not only for entertainment but also as a developmental practice. It can be a powerful and effective practice.

I believe that modern individuals greatly benefit from such practices and their results.

From that point on, it's up to personal choice. Some may find joy in simple melodies ("pyau-pyau"), while others are inclined to explore beyond traditional conventions.
